HMRC figures show that a record 3,003 tax returns were completed on Christmas Day, marking a 15% increase on Christmas Day 2018’s figure of 2,616. The number of self-assessment forms submitted on Boxing Day was up 9% on a year ago, with 9,254 completed on December 26.

HMRC warns over service sites

A number of people are falling victim to websites designed to look like official Government pages that charge for services which are usually free or far cheaper. Among these are sites offering fast-track processing of applications for National Insurance numbers, despite HMRC saying such a facility does not exist, with its free route the fastest option (see this month’s article on checking your NI number).
